I was reminded of this by @josephalford‘s post on the stone trees of Yakutsk. Photographed in 2005 at Curio Bay in New Zealand, the wood knot in this tree branch has been perfectly preserved, part of a petrified forest on the beach.

These stories always start with the creature being killed. If aliens ever land, it won’t matter that we’ve seen a million science fiction movies, we’ll still throw rocks at them until they’re dead.
